06/09/12 Live
by Nathan Jones

The details of Mercy's Electronic Voice Phenomena Weekend at Liverpool Biennial are out. Including world-premieres from Scanner and Iris Garrelfs, and performances from Ross Sutherland, Anat Ben David and Hannah Silva this short season of events will take on the multiple inferences of the electronic voice and paranormal technological phenomena across talks, workshops and performances.

The weekend is the culmination of a two year strand of Mercy's programming which has taken in performances in Liverpool, London Berlin and Edinburgh, presenting a rich circuitry of work across poetics, sound art, underground music, technology and performance.

The Electronic Voice Phenomena Weekend at Liverpool Biennial also marks Mercy's 10th birthday, an occasion we will mark with a free event on Friday 5th October at Camp and Furnace Blade Factory, featuring some of the best artists we have worked with over this time, plus some hidden parasites 8pm - 11pm FRIDAY

Also in Camp and Furnace Blade Factory on 6th October, to blow out the cobwebs of the night before there will be a family friendly opportunity to interact with many of the tools of the trade of avant garde vocal and AV practice, when Sam Meech and Hannah Silva host a workshop designed around feedback, sampling and vocal play from 1-3pm SATURDAY

This will be followed by a two performance lectures exploring the dual implications at work in the title Electronic Voice Phenomena - from Joe Bank's demystifying and simultaneously entrancing lecture Rorshach Audio, to David Tompson's world-renowned performative lecture on the Vocoder How to Wreck a Nice Beach. 4-6pm SATURDAY

The final show of the weekend will take place at Hi-Fi in Liverpool, featuring three internationally esteemed performers presenting new work. Scanner, Steven Fowler and Iris Garrelfs are united by their ability to use technology, remix, sampling and physicality to produce wildly playful and transcendent futures for the human voice. 8-11pm SATURDAY

The weekend, and indeed the entire festival, will be covered in Mercy's Podcast series hosted by Vanessa Bartlett.
